Edge To Edge Quilting
Today’s allover patterns are not the utility stitches of yester year.  My personal choice is patterns that are ornate and lack any clear row to row feel.  If I don’t see one that is right, I have designed my own.  My designs include a cardinal allover in celebration of the Tour de Quilt of 2007, a sudoku pattern, and a cattails pattern to name a select few.  Allovers provide an economical means to bring your projects to completion, and are recommended for quilts meant to be loved and handled.  Allover designs have far fewer starts and stops and hold up to washing for many years if the appropriate threads and battings are used.

Basting Services for Hand Quilters $10 per square yard
Edge To Edge (E to E) quilting $13.00-23.00 per square yard

Custom Quilting
I am passionate about custom quilting but it is a labor intensive process.  As such, it is far more costly than allover quilting.  However, the heirloom piece you have taken years to finish may be drawing you to join in this creative endeavor with me.  I do ask that you request a reservation because I fill up months in advance.   Please note, I do not do rush custom.

Level One, 1 block pattern, 1 border pattern $40 per square yard
Level Two, multiple block and border patterns beginning @ $50 per square yard
Level Three, heirloom techniques, Stitch in the
Ditch and block and border treatments, Freehand fill techniques
beginning @ $65 per square yard

Additional charges apply for all quilts:

    Thread setup charge
(includes new needle and high quality signature cotton thread both top and bottom)
  $5.50 setup fee
    Variegated   $7.50 setup fee
    Metallic   $8.00 setup fee
Quilts provided pressed and on hangers with all sides of the back straight and square will be charged no additional fees.

Additional Fees:

Fees listed as follows (twin size or less, queen, king)
I have devised the following supplemental fee list.  In each case, the fee will help to offset the additional time and effort I take to do things outside of the normal quilting process.

$(5,10,15) Setup fee for backs that have seams going in multiple directions resulting in grainline mismatches at seams (for instance the top of the back may have a vertical seam between two pieces of cross-grain and it is then sewed to a longer piece that is lengthwise grain.  There is a danger of puckering and pleating throughout the quilting process if that is the case.  I spend a lot of time climbing under the machine to smooth the quilt back and try to ease the excess fabric.  Please note that this type of back may pleat during the quilting process despite my best efforts.

$(3,5,7) per seam for piecing a back when the material is provided cut to size and pre-ironed.

$(5,10,15)  per seam for piecing a back if the material is provided off the bolt.

$(5,10,15) per piece for pre-washing and ironing backing fabric (upon request only)

$(7,15,20) basting fee for rippling borders.  See link called “border patrol” from the homepage for advice on how to avoid this charge.

$2 per seam for seam repairs (missed stitching, etc.)  Please note that it is not my responsibility to find and correct piecing mistakes.  However, if I need to close a hole in order to quilt I will do so.

$15 per hour for piecing repairs if they are pre-authorized by you once we discuss any potential problems with your top.  These may include pleats, puckers or missed seams.  A quote for the service will be provided and you will have the option to authorize or I will return the top to you for repair if you so desire.

$(3,5,7)  per strip for muslin strips to be basted to your backing if your measurements are less than four inches longer or wider than the top.  This is necessary for my safety (needles have been known to break if the side clamps are too close to the quilting space).

$(5,10,15)  Centering backing in one direction (see the all about backs link for more info on your backing)  (if you request that I attempt to square both sides I will have to fully baste the quilt.  In addition to the fees listed I will charge a basting fee of $11 a square yard)

Binding Services*
Make binding from your fabric, attach and hand sew**   $.25 per linear in.
Make binding from your fabric and attach   $.15 per linear in.
Attach binding you provide    $.10 per linear in.
*Because hand-binding takes a significant amount of time I keep a limited number of slots available on my schedule.  If you have time constraints, please check first for availability. Binding charges assume straight edge binding with cross-grain cuts of fabric.  Additional fees apply for curves or specialty piecing.  Call for pricing and to check schedule.

Setup Fees**:
    Ironing   $3.00 per square yard
Squaring Up Backing   $2.00 per square yard
    Seeming Backing    $5.00 per seam
Clipping all threads to ¼ in.    $2.00 per square yard
** The above setup is highly recommended for all quilts in order to achieve maximum results.  It is suggested that the piecer complete these tasks prior to turning in the top but all services are available upon request only.

Specialty Fees
Mounting for on Point, scalloped edges or other specialty shape   $20.00
    Additional Borders, each   $20.00

Batting

I am happy to accept battings purchased at your local quilt shops.  I am unable to accept pre-packaged polyester battings available at the local discounter.  They may not be appropriate for machine quilting, and may tear, stretch or beard through your tops.  If you are interested in an alternative to the high quality cotton battings found at your quilt store I stock the following battings and can obtain others upon request.  I charge you for the minimum length needed.  For instance, if your top is 63 by 87 I charge you for only 63 inches.
  • Hobbs Heirloom (80/20).  This batting was developed by Harriet Hargrave in concert with Hobbs to give you the loftiness you find only with polyester coupled with the soft breathability of cotton. $0.21 per linear inch for natural.
  • Hobbs Organic with scrim.  This 100% cotton batting gives you the assurance of no pesticides or residues that might affect the elderly, people with respiratory problems or small children.  It is earth friendly and wonderfully soft.  The extra expense is minimal and well worth the peace of mind. $0.23 per linear inch.
  • Quilters Dream (70/30).  This batting is much thicker than the Hobbs Heirloom and is favored by many seeking a cotton blend. $0.24 per linear inch.
  • Mountain Rose by Mountain Mist Absolutely my favorite batting.  Its softness has no equal and it is incredibly thin yet allows for the perfect stitch.  Once you’ve tried it you will see that it is the most popular batting available today for the discerning quilter. $0.28 per linear inch.

Quilters Dream Select and Deluxe, Warm and Natural, Warm and White, Wool, Silk and black battings available upon request.  Call for pricing.

Backings
I am happy to accept your backing material but ask that it be a minimum of eight inches longer and wider than your quilt top.  Please do not provide sheets.  If desired I can supply 108 inch wide Muslin.  Please let me know if you have pre-washed your top fabrics.  If so I will prewash and iron the muslin purchased at no charge.

High Quality White or Natural Muslin   $9.00 per yard for 108” wide

Preparing your Quilt Top
In order to maximize your experience and minimize your costs, please do the following:
  • Iron Quilt top, paying close attention to your seams and to square your top and blocks as much as possible.
  • If backing is seamed, use a minimum of ½ inch seam and iron open to avoid any bulk.
  • Iron Backing fabric and square-up (make sure you have 90 degree angles on all corners when smoothly folded with edges lined up) making certain to provide six to eight inches additional fabric for both the length and width of the fabric.
  • Trim threads to ¼ inch and remove any stray threads that will show through fabric.
  • Please safety pin a note marking the top edge of your top and backing fabrics.
  • Either fold each item neatly and bag or fold over an oversized hanger.  Pin order form to top.

Optional Preparations:
If the edges of your top contain piecing (a flying geese border for instance) it is a great idea to stay stitch a scant ¼ from the edges to avoid any unraveling of stitching at the seams.

Important reminders:
––The backing fabric is recommended to be 8” longer and wider when squared to the quilt top.  The backing fabric is more likely to draw up during the quilting process and the additional material ensures that the backing will be of sufficient size for the full length and width of the quilt when finished.
––Accurately sewing your borders is critical in order to avoid flared or ruffled borders when the quilting is complete.  To do this correctly you should measure the ends and middle of the quilt on each side, average the difference and then cut the border fabric to the average and ease it onto the quilt.  It is also very important not to handle the borders when you iron or otherwise move the top as the borders can easily stretch out of shape.
––If I pick up your quilt at any local shop and we do not meet in person, I will use your preferred method of communication to review all details and costs prior to quilting.

Policies
Minimum charges of $35 apply to all quilts to cover time spent in mounting quilt.Pricing Effective 10/01/2007 and subject to change without notice.
